Course overviewThe sport industry is an exciting sector enabling you to progress and specialise in a range of exciting areas. Sport provides a great platform to get out and support the local community whether you are teaching sports skills to beginners or right up to professional sportsmen. Teaching in Physical Education is a hugely rewarding job that requires knowledge of a range of sports and coaching theories. The programme of study includes and range of sport based topics, English, maths, work experience, enterprise and entrepreneurial concepts and problem solving.
The aim of this course is to develop your theoretical and practical knowledge of Sport through working towards a Level 3 nationally recognised qualification. The course is also designed to prepare you for higher education in a sports related subject or a career in the area of Sports Coaching, teaching, analysis, nutrition or psychology. You will cover a minimum of 14 units in total over the two year, full-time course.
You will learn through a well-balanced range of studies, which combines practical skills with theoretical knowledge. Your lessons will take place in classrooms and sports facilities (indoor/outdoor). It is recommended that learners complete as much volunteering and work experience as possible to give them an insight into working in the sports industry e.g. Physiotherapists, Fitness Instructors, Sports Physiologists and Sports Teachers. Alongside your course maths and English will be continually assessed to improve your skills in these vital subjects.

Alongside your course you will study maths or English to improve your skills in these vital subjects by attending structured weekly sessions as part of your timetable. Maths and English development is also integrated in practical assignments.
What else do I need to know?The course is aimed at both males and females and there is an Andy Griffin Football Academy (AGFA) male pathway and an AGFA female pathway.
Alongside the Level 3 National Extended Diploma course you will be expected to participate in all activities and excursions that are arranged as part of your course. This will include a residential trip during the first year. Alongside your main course programme you will also study maths and/or English to improve your skills in these vital subjects by attending structured classes. You will also be assessed on your literacy and numeracy skills throughout the course. There are online resources to support you on this course and Additional Learning Support if required.

Assessment is predominantly through coursework, with some externally assessed content.
What financial support is on offer?
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £23,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. The qualification is also designed to prepare learners for appropriate direct employment in the vocational sector, and is suitable for those who have decided that they clearly wish to enter a particular specialist area of work in the areas of sport, leisure and fitness.
