Course overview

The course aims to equip you with the skills, knowledge and understanding that you need to begin to explore career opportunities within the public service sector. You will gain a qualification to enable you to progress onto a Level 2 programme as well as developing skills, which can be useful in all forms of employment. This is a one year, full- time course where you will study Forensic Detection, Personal Skills for Leadership, Public Services Incidents and Health & Fitness for Public Services. You will attend maths and English classes where you will continue to develop your skills whilst working towards an end of year exam. If you plan to progress to a Level 2 course you will need to demonstrate a satisfactory level of improvement in maths and English by the end of the year.

What else do I need to know?

Additional learning opportunities may include visits to prisons, courts and local police/fire services. Guest speakers from the public services industry will provide you with an insight into their roles and responsibilities and possible career options.

What are the entry requirements?

You will have 2 GCSEs at grade 2 or below. However, if you have a keen interest in the subject and commitment to succeed, your entry requirements will be discussed at interview.

How is it assessed?

You must pass all the units to gain this qualification. To pass each unit you will produce a portfolio of evidence including a range of written assignment work, presentations, project work, group work and practical-based assessments.

What financial support is on offer?

This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18. If you are outside this age group please contact 01782 254188.
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £23,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. What can I do next?

Having successfully completed this course you could progress to the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Public Services or go on to do other further education courses. If you feel that you have the ability to develop a range of skills, techniques and aptitudes essential for successful performance in the public sector then this is the course for you.
