Course overview

During the intensive 54 hour Functional Skills in Mathematics course, you will develop mathematical understanding and skills fit for the modern world. You will gain a sound grasp of underpinning skills and basics of mathematics appropriate to your level, along with mathematical thinking to solve problems in familiar situations. The course will contain the following areas:
• Numbers and the number system, such as whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages
• Common Measures, shapes and space
• Handling information and data
You will be supported throughout your journey on the Functional Skills course by your tutor, but it is really important you have a real commitment to achieving the qualification. Whilst studying, you will be expected to attend weekly 3 hour lessons and complete an additional 6 hours of weekly self-study learning through homework and online resources made available to you by your tutor. The course will include two externally set formal exams.

What are the entry requirements?

Our Functional Skills Maths course is intended for students who have achieved Entry 3 and have a good numeracy skills, but have not previously obtained a level 1 or 2 maths qualification.
Prior to the course starting you will be invited in to attend an interview with a member of staff, during the interview you will complete an online initial and paper based assessment, both of which will be used to assess your numeracy skills and the level of course suitable for your needs .
For the duration of the first 4 weeks, you are enrolled on an intro to Functional Skills maths and will be taught the essential skills to help you progress on to the main Functional Skill qualification. At the end of the 4 weeks, you will complete a progress assessment and receive a 1 to 1 with your tutor to discuss which qualification is suitable to support your needs.

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed by two externally set formal examinations at an appropriate time in the course when your tutor feels you have made enough progress. In addition to the external examinations, you will undertake internal controlled assessments every 4 weeks to monitor your progress and provide you with regular feedback.

Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group is pleased to be able to offer financial support to help students meet the costs of attending College.
If you are on state benefits or are on a low income you may be entitled to fee remission towards your course. *This is at the Colleges discretion.
