Course overview
This exciting vocational course is designed to offer a broad look at the many aspects of the music industry with a focus on music performance. This enjoyable course will provide you with the technical ability and encourages a high level of creativity. You will also develop your knowledge of music history, music theory, aural skills, composing, songwriting and music production.This two year programme is centred round you as a musician with a view to improving and/or maximising your current performance skills, your ability to learn and explore new and different styles of music, improve your ability to work as a solo and ensemble musician, and to learn about the music industry.
The course is designed around a number of music projects, such as live performance projects showcasing your work in-house and within the local community, composition or song writing tasks, events organisation and management and research assignments.
As part of your study programme here at the College alongside your chosen course you will complete a maths and/or English qualification if you have not already achieved a grade 4-9 or above. (This will be a GCSE for all students with a grade 3).
The study programme will also incorporate a range of work related experience activities to ensure that you have the breadth of skills required to progress to further/higher education, employment or an apprenticeship
What else do I need to know?
As a student of Music, you will be taught in our purpose-built, state-of-the-art Performing Arts Centre, recording studios and computer music suites. Most of our assignments and resources are online so that you can access them from home as well as in College. We provide lots of opportunities for our students to experience real world industry experience through performing at or event managing gigs, as well as creating and launching your own music.What are the entry requirements?
You will need a minimum of four or more high grades at GCSE in subjects relevant to the course you’d like to study, including maths and/or English Language at grade 4 or above. Alternatively, you’ll need a Level 2 Diploma with overall Merit in a relevant subject and maths and English at appropriate levels.
You will be invited to interview/audition where you will have the opportunity to meet the department and be shown the outstanding facilities at the Performing Arts Centre.
You will be asked questions about your interests, and where applicable your compositions and allow you the opportunity to tell us all about your passion for the subject.
Maths and English
Alongside your course you will study Maths and/or English to improve your skills in these vital subjects by attending structured weekly sessions as part of your timetable. Maths and English development is also integrated in practical assignments.

How is it assessed?
The course contains a number of mandatory and specialist units, some of which are assessed externally. You will be assessed continually throughout the year as you complete each task within a unit of study. Tasks vary and include practical work, written reports and presentations.
What financial support is on offer?

College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £23,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. This nationally recognised qualification (equivalent to 3 A-Levels) is ideal for those wishing to progress to university studies in a related subject or to employment in a wide range of prospective careers for example, performing musician, music management or music composer.
