Course overview

The study of History helps us to understand and explain the past and is a fascinating subject in its own right.

Topics include:

Popular Culture and the Witchcraze of the 16th and 17th centuries.
Content: Popular Culture in Early Modern Europe, the reasons for the growth and decline of the persecution of witches, the regional variation and nature of the witchcraze, the responses of the authorities to witchcraft.

The Wars of the Roses and Henry VII, England 1445-1509
Content: War and politics in late medieval England.

The Birth of a Superpower: The American Revolution: 1740 - 1796
Content: The development of British hegemony in America, Causes of the American Revolution, The American Revolution, War of Independence.

History coursework can be on a wide range of subjects. Popular topics have involved Nazi Germany, the causes of WWI and WWII and the Soviet Union. We allow students a large degree of freedom about their coursework title and are eager to encourage the exploration of areas of particular interest.

The course includes a wide variety of learning experiences such as lectures, one to one tutorials, ICT based tasks, practical work, group work, discussions/debates, DVDs, and personal research when preparing for assessment. There is also a programme of guest lecturers who attend on a regular basis.

What else do I need to know?

Studying history provides an excellent general qualification for many careers. You will be able to use it to progress to Higher Education. Universities recognise the depth of study critical sources analysis that A Level History courses develop. These are cross transferable skills that correlate well with a variety of subjects of study and professional skills. In addition many employers appreciate the skills and knowledge that history students will have gained during their studies. Trips on this course include a trip to London to visit the Natural History Museum and other sights and a trip to New York and Washington to see sights such as the United Nations.
