Course overview

The aim of this course is to provide a programme of training leading to a qualification recognised within the hairdressing industry. This qualification will introduce you to the techniques required by individuals seeking to begin their career in hairdressing.

The programme involves a study of technical units and related units including professional image, working in the industry, blow drying, setting, colouring, basic cutting techniques, styling women's hair, health & safety and temporary colour.

The course runs for three days per week over a one year period for 16-18 year olds.

You learn by carrying out services designed to enable you to show competence working on clients. Some of these are practical, some written and some are spoken repsonses to your tutor's questions.

As part of your study programme you will complete maths and/or English qualifications if you have not already achieved a grade 4 or above.

The study programme will also incorporate work experience and a range of work related activities to ensure that you have the breadth of skills required to progress to further training on Level 2 or an apprenticeship.

What else do I need to know?

You will need to purchase a uniform and your personal hairdressing equipment. The costs of these items will be discussed with you prior to enrolment. You may be able to claim financial support for the cost of essential course materials, please see www.nscg.ac.uk/finance

What are the entry requirements?

You will need 2 GCSEs at grade 2 . However, if you have a keen interest in the subject and commitment to succeed, your entry requirements will be discussed at interview.

How is it assessed?

You are continually assessed throughout the course by building your portfolio of work, assignments and practical assessments are observed by your assessor on a selection of clients.

What financial support is on offer?

This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18. If you are outside this age group please contact 01782 254188.
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £23,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. What can I do next?

You could progress onto a full time Level 2 Hairdressing course or an Apprenticeship.
