The topics you will cover whilst training include:During your on-programme training you will develop the occupational standard’s knowledge, skills and behaviours whilst carrying out occupational duties including: what to cover when completing advanced consultations with clients; how to design, implement and perform and adapt advanced bespoke manual therapies singularly or as a course to improve the face, scalp and body skin condition; post-treatment aftercare and product advice for advanced manual and technical therapies; how to perform and implement risk assessment protocols in relation to the environment, treatments and client risk; applying and implementing organisational operations(salon business systems and processes, data protection) to comply with legal, local rules, industry requirements, treatment protocols, manufacturers' instructions and guidance and to secure, maintain and promote business growth; supervising individual and team activities and, continual professional development.

This occupation is found in a number of sector environments, varying in size style and ambiance. An advanced beauty therapist can be employed within the beauty industry, travel, leisure and health sectors, in a variety of salons, spas and aesthetic environments.
The broad purpose of this occupation is to provide, design and implement bespoke treatment plans. These advanced treatments range from advanced manual therapies such as advanced massage techniques, technical therapies such as face and body electrical treatments, to meet and manage client needs and expectations. They implement organisational operations (salon business systems and processes, data protection) to comply with legal and regulatory requirements, contribute to financial the effectiveness of the business, maintaining and maximising resources, (people, equipment and consumables).
In their daily work, an employee in this occupation interacts with a number of internal (e.g. other members of staff) and external (e.g. product brand, manufacturer representatives and other professionals) individuals, building exemplary relationships based on trust with clients, colleagues and organisations.
An employee in this occupation will be responsible for working independently delivering treatments in a private, secure and safe environment. An advanced beauty therapist will also when required, supervise others to support team and business growth.
What else do I need to know?
On an apprenticeship programme you usually will work for a minimum of 30 hours a week for the employer and then have one day a week at college or designated time in the workplace.Some job roles will require a DBS before starting, you will be advised at interview stage if this is required.
Whilst you are on an apprenticeship your employer pays you a salary, this includes all off the job training as well.
What are the entry requirements?
You must have completed a Beauty Therapy Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard or equivalent to have the fundamental foundation of the job role. You must also have a GCSE grade C or above, in math’s and English or equivalent.
How is it assessed?
Your progress is continually monitored throughout the course. Assessments are arranged when necessary and these take place on-the-job.
Assessments will include:
During your programme you will compile a portfolio of your work which will then be used along with a treatment log as supporting evidence and a basis for the End Point Assessment once your employer is satisfied that you are consistently working at a level 3 standard.
The End Point Assessment will consist of three separate components and will typically take place over a 3 month period after you go through the EPA gateway:
- A knowledge test
- An observation and technology demonstration
- A professional discussion
Assessments will include:

If you successfully achieve all parts of the apprenticeship, your assessor will discuss with you and your employer the next steps to take. Dependent on your roles and responsibilities, this may be the next level of the subject you have been studying already or a different pathway.
