Course overview

The introductory course will help you establish your starting point for your English skills, as well as increasing your confidence to progress onto a nationally recognised qualification. During the introductory course, you will complete an initial and diagnostic assessment to establish your learning gaps and produce an individualised learning plan.

Teaching will be taught in a holistic way, combining all skills to ensure you are prepared for life in the UK. You will be encouraged to improve your speaking/listening skills using discussion/role play and presentations at a higher level. Different reading and writing strategies are used along with exam techniques, with lessons supporting everyday life activities. For example writing will focus on: letter writing, emails and article writing. Grammar is embedded into classes along with themes that comply with a citizenship element, such as: government/problem solving and education. Students are encouraged to work in groups, pairs or independently to gain confidence and encourage expression along with the use of colloquial expressions.

What else do I need to know?

Please note there may be additional costs for books, materials or other expenses.

The introductory course is a trial period of 6 weeks. This will ensure you are enrolled on the correct level and course to suit your needs.

There is an initial cost prior to enrolment, with 2 additional payments during the academic year, prior to taking the exams.

What are the entry requirements?

There are 4 levels offered: Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. For each level, you will first of all be required to take an online ESOL assessment. This is followed by an interview to assess speaking and listening skills and finally, a written diagnostic. Based on these 3 assessments, we will be able to place you on the correct level based on your prior knowledge and skills. If you have achieved a specific level at another college, then we will need to see the certificates as proof and you will still undertake the above assessments.

How is it assessed?

Towards the end of the introductory course learners will undertake a practice examination at an agreed level with the tutor. The practice examination will be used to ensure you progress on to the most appropriate qualification level and also give you confidence in preparation for furture exams.

What financial support is on offer?

A range of financial support may be available for adult students to help towards the cost of your fees, equipment, childcare and/or other expenses while studying, depending on your personal circumstances and the course you are studying. For full details please visit www.nscg.ac.uk/finance

What can I do next?

If you successfully complete the introductory course you will be able to progress to the qualifications at the same time and day.
