Course overview

The fashion industry has changed dramatically in the last decade. In recent years, the fashion and textiles industries have come under scrutiny for their destructive environmental, ethical and moral impacts on the world. Consumers as well as brands are now more conscious of sustainability in fashion. This course aims to teach responsible fashion, as well as challenging new ideas and concepts for this ever-changing industry. The aim of the course is to provide you with an introduction into the exciting world of Fashion. You will raise your awareness of the environmental, social, and ethical impacts on the industry. You will collaborate with others to generate innovative ideas and concepts for fashion. You will learn about the influences in fashion design, fashion promotion, styling, textiles, communication and trends. You will also explore some elements of garment construction. You will produce a portfolio of creative and technical skills that will showcase everything you need for a direct application to HE.

What else do I need to know?

You will have the opportunity to take part in a number of educational visits to relevant exhibitions and galleries as well as market research activities to gain an understanding of target markets, trends and influences within Fashion. You will need a selection of fashion based materials, including drawing equipment, and scissors for paper and fabric. Further details concerning equipment required for the course will be provided prior to you starting the course.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need a minimum of four or more high grades at GCSE in subjects relevant to the course you’d like to study, including maths and/or English Language at grade 4 or above. You will also need a GCSE grade 4 or above in an Art-related subject and/or a good portfolio.

How is it assessed?

This is a hands on, practical qualification and you will be assessed throughout the programme at key assessment points. This will involve fashion research, design sheets and project work, sketchbooks, practical work, and contextual studies notes and essays. All assessments will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. Both first and second years of your main programme will include externally marked units.

What financial support is on offer?

This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18. If you are outside this age group please contact 01782 254188.
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £23,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances.
