Course overview
This exciting course provides a broad curriculum aimed at a creative industries career, catering to both traditional art, craft and design and digital design students. It includes development of drawing, 3D, compositional and presentation skills; which are important to any creative student. In addition, there are graphics, moving image, photographic and concept art projects. Art, craft and design will include fine art, illustration, print, ceramics and surface pattern based projects.As well as developing your creative skills, you will be encouraged to learn more about the history of key subject areas and key artists and designers. The course takes one year to complete if you are studying full-time. To achieve the BTEC Diploma you need to obtain a pass or above in all coursework units to achieve the full qualification.
You will continue to improve your Maths and/or English skills in structured lessons alongside your course and Maths and English will also be integrated into your main course programme.
What else do I need to know?
We will provide you with basic art and design materials such as paper, pencils and charcoal, however, you will be given an additional materials list which will be needed to complete the course. We also go on both local and national trips to the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, Liverpool Tate and Manchester Art Gallery for which you would be asked to pay a small contribution. Students are expected to work independently at times as part of their programmes, both inside and outside college. On successful completion of the course, students will receive a certificate in BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design Skills.What are the entry requirements?
You will have 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above plus a good portfolio. However, if you have a keen interest in the subject and commitment to succeed, your entry requirements will be discussed at interview.
If you do not have a minimum GCSE grade 4 for Maths / English you would study these as a part of your timetabled study programme. These structured weekly sessions will help you to improve your skills in these vital subject/s. In addition Maths and English development is integrated into practical course sessions and assignments.

How is it assessed?
You are continuously assessed throughout the course both formally and informally. Assessments take the form of an individual display of work, which is assessed and evaluated by the staff that teach you. The results are available for discussion and advice about how you might best progress on the course. Your overall qualification is designated a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction.

College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £23,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. What can I do next?
Full, successful completion of L2 BTEC Diploma in Art & Design Skills, qualifies you to apply for one of our Level 3 BTEC Extended Diplomas, including Fashion, Art and Design, Games & Animation and Photography. A Merit grade is preferred for progression. The course also enables you to produce a folio of 2D or digital work, to support direct applications to employers.
