Course overview

This course will provide you with a broad understanding of mechanical, electrical or electronic engineering that will prepare you to study the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering or for employment as an engineering apprentice. You will study a range of core subjects to give you a good grounding in engineering basics including working safely, using and interpreting engineering information and engineering maths. You will also take other subjects to give you a broader understanding of key engineering principles. These may include electrical and mechanical science, engineering materials, understanding a range of engineering processes and other topics. You will continue to improve your maths and/or English skills in structured lessons alongside your course, and if you plan to progress to a Level 3 course you will need to demonstrate a satisfactory level of improvement in maths and/or English by the end of the year.

You will learn through a lot of different activities across your course. These will include classroom-based learning, completing projects, and learning using specialist equipment in our laboratories and workshops, using computer software (including simulation) and practical sessions. You will also be expected to complete projects and assignments outside of your main classes.

What else do I need to know?

As part of your course, you will visit engineering companies to find out more about real-life engineering in a range of settings. There may also be opportunities to develop your employability skills through a range of activities and projects.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need three GCSEs at grade 4 or above, one of which should include maths or science. You should also have an interest in engineering and technology.

How is it assessed?

You will complete a range of projects, assignments, presentations and practical activities. These will be assessed as you go through the course so that you know how you are doing. There will be two external assessments throughout the course.

What financial support is on offer?

This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18. If you are outside this age group please contact 01782 254188.
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £23,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. What can I do next?

Having successfully completed the course with a merit, you will be well prepared to progress onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering at the College. Once you’ve completed your Level 3 programme, you could move into higher education, an advanced apprenticeship or employment. You could also move into an apprenticeship where you would be employed by a local company but continue your studies at College.
