Course overview

This course will provide you with a good introduction to Carpentry and Joinery and you will also learn about general construction skills. You will develop practical skills in this trade. You will learn about basic issues relating to construction including working safely, handling & storing resources, your responsibilities at work, communication skills and your will develop your personal effectiveness skills to enable you to progress to further training or employment. During the practical part of the course, you will begin by making a wooden frame using four different types of joints. You will then progress on to making a chopping board and a saw stool before making the test piece - a window frame with an internal sill.

What else do I need to know?

This course is taught over the course of an academic year on two evenings per week. You will spend one evening developing your practical skills by completing a range of practical projects in our workshops. And, on the other evening will be classroom-based and computer-based learning to develop your understanding of the tools, materials and technologies used in your trade. You will be expected to complete work outside your main classes.
For the practical evening on this course, you will be required to wear the following:
- Work trousers
- Toe-capped safety boots
- High vis
- Safety glasses

What are the entry requirements?

No formal entry requirements are required.
We will assess your support needs at the beginning of the course.

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed by the use of practical assessments and assignments that will form part of a portfolio of your work. You will also complete practical and theory tests at the end of your training course.

What financial support is on offer?

Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group is pleased to be able to offer financial support to help students meet the costs of attending College.
If you are on state benefits or are on a low income you may be entitled to fee remission towards your course. *This is at the Colleges discretion.

What can I do next?

On completion of this course students can progress onto Level 2 or find employment in a related trade.
