The HNC in Engineering is taught by experienced industry professionals who are experts in their field. The aim of the course is to provide skills, knowledge and behaviours for Technician Engineers to enable them to progress in industry. As part of this course, you will be encourage to develop high levels analytical skills linked to the sector along with the development and understanding of design concepts.
The programme is delivered over two full days per week and you would normally complete the HNC programme in one year.
The duration of the course and study mode may be adapted according to the needs of the individual student by negotiation with the Curriculum Leader. All students will be interviewed by one of our experts and entry requirements and suitability for the course can be discussed further.
Students will study eight units over a 1 year duration. The HNC qualification requires the achievement of at least a pass grade in a minimum of eight units. The HNC is constructed using four core units and four optional units selected by the delivery team in line with industry requirement.
For the HNC the core units are:
- Engineering Maths
- Engineering Design
-Managing a Professional Engineering Project
The teaching is designed to provide students with the required theoretical knowledge in the context of practical experiments and formal teaching. In addition to traditional teaching methods, wide use is made of industry standard software and technical equipment along with computer-based learning resources.Furthermore, as part of the course some classes, whichever appropriate may be completed by virtual delivery using Mirco-Soft Teams.
The HNC Engineering programme is intended for students who plan to enter into employment in the engineering industry. Suitable students are likely to hold a minimum of a Level 3 qualification in Engineering or an equivalent Level 3 qualification. The department will also consider relevant industrial experience aligned with the level of the programme.
How is it assessed?
You will be assessed in many forms such as but not limited to written assignment work, project work, presentations, group work and practical based assessments. The Level 4 qualification has a minimum credit value of 120 credits. The final grade for each unit will be an aggregate of the grades achieved for each assignment with in that unit.
What financial support is on offer?
There are two types of loans to help students cover the costs of their higher education course in college: tuition fee loans and living cost loans (also called maintenance loans). You pay these loans back when you finish your course and earn over £27,295. If you earn less than that, you won’t have to repay anything. If you’re earning more than that, we’ll work out your repayments at 9% of your income over that amount. Maintenance loans are only available to students studying on a full-time basis. What can I do next?
Students will gain a nationally recognised and highly respected higher education qualification in engineering which can lead to employment or career enhancement in general Engineering or other Engineering Fields. Students could also undertake further higher education study on Degree or Higher National Diploma courses.
