Course overview

The topics you will cover whilst training include:
College day release course

Bricklayers lay bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures e.g. chimney stacks. They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects. The range of sites and projects that bricklayers will work on include large commercial developments, new builds in housing, alterations, extensions and restorations. A bricklayer may work one-on-one or on larger jobs where their bricklaying group (gang) may work on a particular section of a building alongside other bricklaying gangs as well as other trades.
On completion of this Apprenticeship, the apprentice will have satisfied the requirements to obtain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Card at the appropriate level.

What else do I need to know?

On an apprenticeship programme you usually will work for a minimum of 30 hours a week for the employer and then have one day a week at college or designated time in the workplace.
Some job roles will require a DBS before starting, you will be advised at interview stage if this is required.

Whilst you are on an apprenticeship your employer pays you a salary, this includes all off the job training as well.

What are the entry requirements?

3 GSCE’s grade 3 or above in Maths, English, and one other. If not already achieved, the apprentice will have to achieve Level 1 English and Maths and take the test for level 2 prior to taking their end-point assessment.

How is it assessed?

Your progress is continually monitored throughout the course. Assessments are arranged when necessary and these take place on-the-job.
Together with the college day release course, which would be over 24 - 30 months.

Assessments will include:
By observing of your performance; responses to written and/or spoken questions to show your knowledge and understanding; e-portfolio of supporting evidence containing testimonies, reflective accounts, assignments, work products such as activity planning sheets, completed risk assessments, continual professional development evidence.

Once you have completed your programme, met all of the pre-requisites for the EPA, including English and maths requirements, and your employer is satisfied that you are consistently working at or above the level set out in the occupational standard, you will be put through for your End Point Assessment which will take place within a 4 month period.

The EPA consists of 3 discrete assessment methods:
- A knowledge test
- A skills test
- Oral questioning underpinned by a portfolio

What financial support is on offer?

While you are on an apprenticeship your employer pays you a salary and supports you whilst you undertake your training

What can I do next?

If you successfully achieve all parts of the apprenticeship, your assessor will discuss with you and your employer the next steps to take. Dependent on your roles and responsibilities, this may be the next level of the subject you have been studying already or a different pathway.
