Course overview

Course content includes a wide range of topics delivered to include: Shared Core Units covering Communication; Equality & Diversity; Personal Development and Duty of Care. Children and Young People Core Units covering Child Development (0-8 years) and how to promote this; Health & Safety; Positive outcomes for children; Developing positive relationships and Working together for benefit of children. Early Years Pathway Units covering Context & Principles for early years provision; Promoting learning and development; Promoting children’s welfare and well-being; Professional practice and Supporting children’s speech, language and communication.
A range of optional units will also be covered.
Progress is monitored and assessments arranged which take place on-the-job. An emphasis is on practical skills supported by knowledge. Assessment has three aspects: observation of performance, knowledge and understanding you show to written/oral questioning and assignments, and a portfolio of supporting evidence. Completion of the Level 3 Diploma will enable you to gain full-time employment in the Children’s Workforce as a qualified Early Years Practitioner.

What else do I need to know?

What are the entry requirements?

A Level 2 qualification is preferable in Early Years or equivalent but experience will be considered.
GCSE maths and English is an entry requirement or alternative qualifications O Level grade C and above or CSE grade 1. Certificates must be made available to enrol on to the course.

How is it assessed?

Assessed through set assignments and through workplace observations and professional discussions. An e-portfolio of evidence is collated with the support of your tutor and assessor to meet the assessment criteria.

What financial support is on offer?

If you are 19-23, it is your first Level 3, and are studying an SFA approved Level 3 programme you may be eligible for full fee remission.
You can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan or Higher Education Loan to help with the costs of your course if you are 19 or older and the course you are studying is an eligible Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 course.
*This is at the Colleges discretion.

What can I do next?

Career progression within the sector and also progression on to higher level courses, including the foundation degree after one year post experience of gaining the Level 3.
