Course overview
The HNC Health and Social Care is taught by experienced industry professionals. As part of this course, you will be required to complete a minimum of 225 hours of work experience within a health and/or social care setting of your choice, either as an employee or in a voluntary capacity. This placement experience is a mandatory requirement of passing the Level 4 course and allows you to apply the theories and concepts of learning within the classroom to the practices and realities of a workplace.The course promotes and instills the values and skills required to work within a health care field. During the year you will study seven modules which could include law, professional principles, physiology and psychological perspectives in health.
You will also receive advice and guidance on applying to study at University for a BA (Hons) degree on a ‘top-up’ year.
What else do I need to know?
The placement will require you to undertake a DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service). You will be expected to undertake study independently when you are not in college.What are the entry requirements?
Typically, you will need a relevant Level 3 qualification and hold a minimum GCSE English at grade C (4)or above OR industry experience. All students will be interviewed and assessed individually
How is it assessed?
You will be assessed in many forms including written assignment work, project work, presentations, group work and practical based assessments. The Level 4 qualification has a minimum credit value of 120 credits. There are five mandatory core units totalling 75 credits and three specialist units totalling 45 credits.
What financial support is on offer?
There are two types of loans to help students cover the costs of their higher education course in college: tuition fee loans and living cost loans (also called maintenance loans). You pay these loans back when you finish your course and earn over £27,295. If you earn less than that, you won’t have to repay anything. If you’re earning more than that, we’ll work out your repayments at 9% of your income over that amount. Maintenance loans are only available to students studying on a full-time basis. What can I do next?
After successful completion of your HNC you could progress to a HND or undergraduate study programme at university such as nursing or social work. Alternatively you can progress directly into employment in roles such as a senior community support worker or healthcare support worker.
