Course overview

The course aims to equip learners with the skills necessary to plan, deliver and evaluate safe and effective care for all age groups from birth onwards and an insight in to a wide range of career opportunities within the health and social care sector. You will also gain a qualification to enable you to progress onto a Level 2 programme as well as developing personal skills, which can be used later in all forms of employment.
This is a one year, full time course where units of study include Health and Social Care Needs, Communication with Adults and Children in Health and Social Care and Creative and Leisure Activities for Adults in Health and Social Care. You will be expected to take part in a work experience placement where you will be able to put your knowledge, understanding and practical skills into practice. You will attend maths and English classes where you will continue to develop your skills as you work towards an end of year exam. If you plan to progress to a Level 2 course you will need to demonstrate a satisfactory level of improvement in maths and English by the end of the year.

What else do I need to know?

Additional learning opportunities may include visits to a range of health and social care settings. Guest speakers from the Primary Health Care Team, hospitals and local Children’s Centres etc. will provide you with a information on a range of career opportunities and an insight in to health and social care sector.

What are the entry requirements?

Ideally you will need one GCSE at grade 3 or above or an Entry Level 3 qualification and be aged between 16 and 23 years old at the beginning of your course.

How is it assessed?

You must pass all the units to gain this qualification. To pass each unit you will produce a portfolio of evidence including a range of written assignment work, presentations, project work, group work and practical-based assessments.

What financial support is on offer?

This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18. If you are outside this age group please contact 01782 254188.
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under ÂŁ23,000 can receive up to ÂŁ20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. Before embarking on this course, it is advisable to gain some experience of working within the health and social care sector. If you’re caring, understanding and have an interest in the health, education and welfare of some of life’s most vulnerable people then this course may appeal to you.
