Course overview
The course aims to equip you with the skills, knowledge and understanding to embark on training to work with young children. You will gain a qualification to enable you to progress onto a Level 2 programme or possibly an Apprenticeship. It will also help you to develop employability skills, which can be used later in all forms of employment. The course also focuses on improving learners’ skills in Maths and English. This is a one year, full-time course.The units you will study include Communication Skills with Children, Planning for the Physical and Emotional Care Needs of Children, Creative Activities for Young Children and Keeping Children Safe. You will attend maths and English classes where you will improve your skills whilst working towards an end of year exam. If you plan to progress to a Level 2 course you will need to demonstrate a satisfactory level of improvement in English and maths by the end of the year.
What else do I need to know?
Additional learning opportunities may include visits to a range of early years’ settings. Visits to local primary schools give an insight into the early years sector.What are the entry requirements?
You will have 2 GCSEs at grade 2 or below. However, if you have a keen interest in the subject and commitment to succeed, your entry requirements will be discussed at interview.
How is it assessed?
You must pass all the units to gain this qualification. To pass each unit you will produce a portfolio of evidence including a range of written assignment work, presentations, project work, group work and practical-based assessments.
What financial support is on offer?

College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under ÂŁ23,000 can receive up to ÂŁ20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. What can I do next?
Before embarking on this course, it is advisable to gain some experience of working with young children. If you’re caring, understanding and have an interest in child health, education and welfare then this course may be the one for you. Having successfully completed this course you could progress to the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Early Years or go on to do other further education courses.
