To complete the extended diploma you will attend college, full-time, for two years. Your timetable will include independent study time to enable you to consolidate the work carried out in lectures. All Level 3 Extended Diplomas are work-related qualifications designed to offer you a choice of routes into Higher Education and employment. Whilst on the course you will study a combination of Core and Optional units, the core unit content is fundamental to the success of tourism and event organisations, while the optional units are varied and will equip learners with a broad and diverse experience.

The course is about the practical development of business knowledge and skills. You learn, and are assessed, by doing. To help you there is a course team of friendly, approachable tutors committed to your success who will encourage you to use the College’s extensive resources including computer facilities, library, private study area and careers and counselling service.

As part of your study programme you will also study maths and/or English to support/improve your skills in these vital subjects. If you do not have GCSE grade 4 in maths and/or English you will attend weekly taught sessions as part of your timetable. Maths and English development is also integrated in practical assignments and is essential for future progression and employment, as all tourism and events management organisations require you to have a minimum grade 4 in these subjects.

What else do I need to know?

There will also be additional enrichment activities which will support your learning.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need a minimum of four or more high grades at
GCSE in subjects relevant to the course you’d
like to study, including maths and/or English
Language at grade 4 or above, or BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Travel and Tourism at a Merit or above standard plus Maths &/or English at grade 3 or above.

If you do not have these qualifications and are keen to join the course, we will be happy to consider and advise you individually. If progressing from a Level 2 vocational qualification, we would ideally expect you to have achieved a Level 2 English or Maths qualification or be able to demonstrate competence at this level.

How is it assessed?

You are continuously assessed throughout the course. 20% external assessment (where one unit is assessed by a written exam and one unit assessed by a task set by the awarding body and completed under supervised conditions). 80% internally assessed coursework. 13 units in total. For each unit national standards are laid down, in which you have to show you are competent. Your tutors ensure that you are given opportunities to do this through projects, assignments, case studies and problem-solving situations.

You are required to sit one external exam, and complete two timed tasks that are externally assessed by the exam board.
