Course overview

The HNC Business course is taught by experienced industry experienced professionals and is designed for students wanting to pursue a career in business management.

In the first year you will study mandatory units including Business Environment, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Leadership & Management,
Accounting Principles and Managing a Successful Business Project. You will also study specialist units which may include Entrepreneurial Ventures and Innovation & Commercialisation.

What else do I need to know?

The course lasts for one year and is
studied over two full days each week (Thursday and Friday). To complete the HND a second year would be studied, again two days per week.

To help you there is a course team of friendly, approachable tutors committed to your success. Your Curriculum Leader and Course Tutors will meet with you regularly to discuss your progress.

What are the entry requirements?

Typically, you will need to have completed a relevant BTEC Extended Diploma course in a business related subject, OR an A Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in more than one subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades A* - C (9-4). The College also welcomes applications from mature students and students with relevant experience but without formal qualifications. All prospective students will be interviewed and assessed individually.

How is it assessed?

Teaching, learning & assessment methods
Teaching, learning and assessment methods used to deliver this curriculum are designed to provide experience, and reflection and the development of concepts which can then be explored. Teaching methods used vary according to the nature of each unit, but include formal lectures, individual research projects and student centred activities. There will be access to small group teaching with high levels of teaching hours and individual support in facilitating this programme.

What financial support is on offer?

There are two types of loans to help students cover the costs of their higher education course in college: tuition fee loans and living cost loans (also called maintenance loans). You pay these loans back when you finish your course and earn over £27,295. If you earn less than that, you won’t have to repay anything. If you’re earning more than that, we’ll work out your repayments at 9% of your income over that amount. Maintenance loans are only available to students studying on a full-time basis. They are not available for students studying on a part-time basis. For full details visit www.nscg.ac.uk/finance

What can I do next?

On successful completion of the HNC course you can progress on to the HND Business. On successful
completion of the HND you could progress onto a ‘top-up’ degree at university. These courses will also equip you with the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for success in employment in the business environment, at a supervisory or management level.
