2nd March 2021

Students from NCSG virtually welcomed Carol Shanahan OBE to the College, who provided a really informative talk about her life, background education and her hugely successful career.

On Monday 1 March, the anniversary of the date she first met husband and business partner, Kevin, back in 1979, Carol spoke to students from various courses about her younger life and shared with students that her parents separated in 1963, which growing up had a huge effect on her and ultimately, her education, resulting in Carol leaving school with no formal qualifications.

Not letting that defeat her, Carol kick started her career at the age of 17 and gained a job as a main-frame computer operator for Hoskyns Systems. Later, she moved onto CMC where she installed and supported data prep and distributed data processing systems.

Fast-forward to 2021, Carol is now a hugely successful business woman and business owner. Carol provided students with an overview of her role as Chair at Synectics Solutions, a leading-edge fraud detection and data solutions provider and her role as Chair and at Port Vale Football Club, which she is the co-owner of.

After hearing Carol’s inspirational talk, students had the opportunity to ask Carol a number of questions, which included;

What drives you to operate within different industries with varying roles and how do you manage your time?

What are the barriers to being a female chair in a male dominated environment?

How big is the hospitality industry in Football?

What are your hopes and ambitions for The Hubb Foundation in the future?

From everyone at NSCG, we’d like to thank Carol for sharing her inspirational career journey with us.
