Students from our Performing Arts, Music and Film courses recently had the chance to chat and be involved in a virtual Q&A session with actor, Bradley James to hear all about his career and advice for anyone looking to get into the film industry.
Q. Do you have a role model who has inspired your career as an actor?
A. My mum is definitely my biggest role model. We have always had a close relationship and she is my rock. Having someone in your life who is supportive and keeps your feet on the ground is really important in this industry.
Q. What film or play has impacted you the most?
A. On an emotional level, Mark Rylands in the play, ‘Jerusalem’ had a real impact on my career. In the production, he was a man absorbed within his world and the character he was playing and this is something I aspire to achieve myself.
Q. What has been the most challenging aspect of your career and how did you overcome this?
A. When you’re not actually acting and working, this can be the most challenging aspect of your life. The perception of life as an actor from many people, is one of all glitz and glamour. It is important to note that you won’t always be working or on set. You have to find a way to stay motivated and put a lot of effort into your auditions. Accepting rejection and the common scenario that you will receive knockbacks is really important.
Q. What are the hardest scenes to work on?
A. Preparation is everything as an actor. The hardest scenes are the ones that you haven’t prepared for.
Q. Do you have any advice for students who suffer with anxiety, but who are keen to get into acting?
A. Everyone in the industry is far too busy to care what you are doing yourself! You can only have control overt certain things and it is important to realise that the fears of other people don’t matter. As you get older, you do begin to realise this.
Q. How has the pandemic affected your work as an actor?
A. I’m very fortunate to have found myself working and producing during this time. You have to keep busy when there is no work, which can be tricky.
Q. What are the best moments on a set?
A. Making friends on set does make the whole project more enjoyable and this helps you to form a connection with fellow actors. If you do your homework in advance of getting onto the set, this makes your work much more enjoyable. Otherwise it can be really hard work.
Q. Do you have recommendations for choosing a drama school or university?
Q. The only thing in your control is the amount of effort you put into your education. Research all about the school or university of your choice and make sure it is the one for you. Be honest with yourself about what you want to get out of going to university, otherwise it can be a tough 3 years.
