Jake Bailey is currently a 2nd year student studying A Level Computer Science, Maths and Psychology at Stafford College and has taken time out of his schedule to help out in the local community. Here Jake tells us what he has been up to over the last few weeks.

Q. We would love to know more about your experience of volunteering at the food bank. Tell us all about it.

A. At the Cannock Chase & District food bank I'm working every Tuesday and Thursday as one of the primary people in organising the correct food and toiletries for each order. I receive emails with the orders which state an order reference number, the address and the number of adults/children in the household. With this information I then submit the relevant details into a spreadsheet and prepare each order. There are set boxes and custom boxes which I prepare and set up so that the delivery drivers can come and collect each parcel and know where it's being taken. I also help out when receiving donations by bringing all the food items into the building so they can be weighed, dated and places on the relevant shelves in the facility.

Q. We hear you have been really busy putting your IT skills to use at the college. What have you been doing to help out?

A. I have been helping my mum Sarah Bailey, and her team to get set up on a virtual software package since the beginning of lockdown to help everyone to stay in contact. I have been trying to get everyone within the team set up on Microsoft Teams, which is a versatile program that doesn't include time limits on meetings. I have then helped them to set up a team to host their necessary meetings, supported them in changing passwords as required and assisted them to access the software on their college laptops, which has also been a really useful teaching aid.

Q. As the Students’ Union Secretary for Stafford College, how are you preparing for the new academic year?

A. I am working most days preparing for the union handover in September which includes writing letters to the succeeding officers and communication with the President. I have also been helping out Newcastle College’s Students' Union because they never filled the position of secretary, so I'm doing my part between both campuses.

Q. What are your plans after leaving NSCG?

A. I hold an unconditional offer to study BSc Software Engineering at the University of Portsmouth so that's where I'll be going in September.

We wish Jake all the very best for his future studies.
