The Drum’s Chip Shop Awards attract some of the best talent around and offer a unique platform for creatives of all levels to compete in one of the most accessible creative awards on the planet. In the competition where anything goes, there were over 30 categories and the judging panel was made up of oodles of creatives from some of the nation’s best agencies.
Our very own Dave Holcroft, Lecturer in Graphic Design at Stafford College, won Best Press Advertisement and was nominated for Best Retail Advertisement at the awards for his impressive submissions, ‘Behind Every Great Wallpaper’ and ‘Delivery From Above’.
The Chip Shop Awards are hugely important for both budding and working creatives, as they provide a platform for people outside the advertising industry, to compete with industry professionals on a level playing field. On winning the award, Dave said: “The fact that credit is given for great ideas and execution rather than big budgets and statistics makes it really special when someone like me, a teacher, is judged a winner by a panel of industry experts ahead of some recognisable industry names. In 2017 I was awarded as the outright winner and actually won the Grand Prix category. This year I wanted to prove that it wasn’t a fluke or a flash in the pan and that I can produce award winning work consistently. By yet again beating a number of advertising agencies and industry professionals I’ve proven that talent exists outside the boundaries of the ad industry and I hope that serves as inspiration to others, particularly my students that with hard work they too can be successful. As a teacher of a vocational subject I think it’s important to maintain my own personal practice as it demonstrates to the students that I’m still relevant and able to walk the walk as well as talking the talk in class! I hope that by putting my work out there for public consumption and successfully going up against industry professionals means the students have a teacher they can be proud of and feel reassured that they are being taught by someone who knows a thing or two about the career path they intend to follow. My next aim is to see some of my students up there on the podium winning awards and being recognised for some of the excellent work they are capable of producing.”
Winner: ‘Best Press Ad’ - chipshopawards.com/the-drum-chip-shop-awards/chip-shop-awards-2019#94941 (perhaps create bit.ly link?)
‘Behind Every Great Wallpaper’- We each spend hundreds of pounds on fancy wallpaper to make our homes look nice, but no one ever leaves without buying the adhesive with which to stick it to the wall. With clever use of advertising space, this ad aims to remind people that every wallpaper needs a good strong adhesive behind it.
Nominated for: ‘Best Retail Ad’ - chipshopawards.com/chip-shop-awards-2019/best-retail/delivery-from-above (perhaps create bit.ly link?)
In addition to the Best Press category, Dave also entered the Best Retail category for his clever spin on the world renowned, Amazon logo, with his submission, ‘Delivery From Above’- A subtle subversion of the Amazon logo to highlight their venture into the use of drones as delivery vehicles. Your parcels will still go from A-Z, but now they arrive by air.
