Stafford College Health and Social Care Student wins Dignity in Care Award

Mille is currently studying on a BTEC Level 3 Health and Social Care course at Stafford College and is in her first year of the programme. Since joining the course Millie applied for an amazing placement opportunity working with Royal Stoke Hospital focusing on supporting service users and families in palliative care.

Commenting on her award win, Lecturer Zoe Arrowsmith said: "Throughout the placement, Millie has demonstrated a kind, caring and compassionate nature towards service users within her care. Milliee has gone above and beyond to support the dignity and respect of all of all service users within her care which has been recognised by her placement officers and supervisors who continually inform us. This experience has also developed Millie’s confidence and communication skills with both service users and service provides to ensure the best possible care is being provided at all times. The hospital have provided some excellent feedback that Millie has been in some difficult situations and that she has handled them extremely well and that both staff and patients have been extremely complimentary of her kind and caring practice. Similarly, her supervisors have stated that she remained professional and committed throughout the whole placement experience and feels that she will make an excellent nurse in the future. Following on from this feedback, the Royal Stoke Hospital have also offered Millie a health care assistant job when she finishes her college course.

"Millie has attended a variety of teaching sessions focussing on palliative care where she has learnt a lot about the skills that are required when upholding dignity for vulnerable service users which she been able to apply to her practice effectively. Moreover, Millie has been an excellent student in college as she has shared her experiences with her cohort whilst maintaining confidentiality at all times. This has enabled Millie’s peers to also learn about different areas of health and social care which has enhanced their knowledge particularly in palliative care. Millie has found herself being a very supportive role to her peers in both an educational and personal capacity which has been recognised by her tutors and we are extremely proud of Millie’s continual kind, caring and professional attitude in all areas of her programme of study. Millie is an extremely committed individual who has developed academically since the start of her course but more importantly she has progressed in maturity which she understands is an important trait to have in her chosen care profession. Following on from this, Millie has fed back to her personal tutor that her experiences in the community have helped and supported her academic performance as she is achieving two grades above her predicted grade and is in fact achieving the highest grades she can at her current level."
