Over the course of the third national lockdown, second year BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science students at Stafford College alongside lecturing staff, set themselves the ambitious target of running or walking virtually the distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats, a combined total of 835 miles by Friday 12 February 2021.

The challenge which started after the announcement by Prime Minister, Boris Johnson on Monday 4 January 2021, which instructed all schools and colleges to close.

With the aim of promoting the importance of physical and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, students decided to coincide the challenge with raising money for the charity, CLIC Sargent alongisde, a charity that not only serves children and their families who are fighting cancer, but a charity that is close to the hearts of a number of students taking part in the challenge.

Jack Bullock, Curriculum Leader for Sport said: “We are delighted to be able to reveal that not only did the group hit their target, they smashed their virtual journey, amassing 1060 miles completed in total. In the process students and staff have raised £1028 for CLIC Sargent, more than double their initial target.”

Joe Burns, Senior Fundraising & Engagement Manager for CLIC Sargent, North & West Endland said: "Fundraising, especially given everything that’s happened over the last year, really does make a difference. COVID-19 has massively impacted the children and young people with cancer we help, and has also really effected how we raise our money too. So having supporters like you and the team at Stafford College really does make a difference, and helps to fund fab CLIC Sargent social workers, who have been helping young people with cancer during the pandemic."

Challenge organiser Sport Lecturer, Alex Brown said: “I’m so proud of everything the group continue to achieve, this is just the tip of the iceberg. As individuals and as a collective they are a brilliant group and it’s a pleasure to tutor them.”
