IAE in Stoke-on-Trent, are the UK’s leading manufacturer of livestock handling equipment, equestrian stabling, steel fencing and shelters. Here HR Advisor Michael Brian chats to us about their apprenticeships and the exciting opportunities available for long-term career progression.

Q. How many apprentices do you currently employ?

A. At the moment we have approximately 15 over various departments within the business.

Q. Which areas of your business do you offer apprenticeships in?

A. We offer a wide range of apprenticeships both on the shop floor and in our growing team of office colleagues.

Q. Typically, what type of positions to you recruit for?

A. Our biggest area of growth is on the shop floor where we take on: Machine Operatives, Welders (Mig/robotic) and general production operatives. Within our office based roles we have recently recruited for, Transport Administrators, HR administrator, CAD operative and Health & Safety Administrator.


Q. What training opportunities are on offer to your apprentices?

A. We work hard to provide high quality training for our apprentices to enable them to gain the best training for their role. Apprentices receive bespoke, modular training, off-the-job training as well as internal training courses.

Q. As valued members of your workforce, what rewards or benefits are available to them?

A. We have monthly reviews with all our apprentices to talk through their progress. Once their program has been completed they attend an annual apprentice awards ceremony, which is a fantastic occasion.


Q. How much can an apprentice expect to earn?

A. Our apprentices earn £7.98per hour from day one, with frequent pay reviews throughout their apprenticeship.


Q. In your opinion what makes a good apprenticeship interview?

A. A candidate who has done their research on the company and is well prepared! This definitely helps with a person’s confidence too.

Q. Are there progression opportunities within the business once an apprentice has finished their apprenticeship?

All apprentices will be taken on permanently following their apprenticeship. Apprentices can move into other departments at IAE or progress their career to a team leader, supervisor, or manager role.
