Talking all things apprenticeships Matt Bloomer, Managing Director of independently owned, Traction Equipment (Stafford) Ltd took time out to chat to us about their apprenticeship provision and the career routes available to learners on completion of an apprenticeship with them.

Q. How many apprentices do you currently employ?

A. We currently employ one apprentice who has recently started with us. Our last apprentice progressed into full time employment on the successful completion of their apprenticeship.

Q. Typically, what kind of roles are available to apprentices?

A. We currently offer Level 2 and 3 Plant Mechanic & Plant Technician apprenticeships.

Q. What training opportunities are on offer to your apprentices?

A. As a rule, apprentices are trained in-house on our own plant & machinery by our own engineers. Our staff are highly experienced and it is fantastic to see the next generation of employees learning from experience.

Q. What can an apprentice expect from working with you?

A. We understand that we are offering an opportunity for apprentices to have a real-world perspective of working with construction plant, while watching and listening to our trained engineers. A dedicated mentor will coach their work and help with course requirements. Consistent supervision and direction will be provided and a good level of enthusiasm and focus is expected in return.

Q. What can an apprentice expect to earn?

A. The current apprentice rate (£8944pa) is paid for the first 3-6 months. Thereafter they can expect to earn up to £12,500pa with annual cost of living wage increases from 2.5%

Q. How can apprenticeships progress within your business on completion of their apprenticeship?

A. We are proud to offer mentoring to our apprentices up to Level 3. At the end of the apprenticeship a full-time employment may be offered with earnings from £24,000pa. This will be dependent on our requirements at the time and the individual’s aptitude.
