Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) offers a wide-range of apprenticeships across all industry sectors, so you can earn whilst you learn. We recently chatted to James Hardacre, Management Accountant Manager from the Hanley Economic Building Society to hear about the types of apprenticeships they offer across the business and how learners can progress upon completion of their apprenticeship.
Q. How many apprentices do you currently employ?
A. We currently employ one finance apprentice, and we have a number of former apprentices who have completed their studies and have since been promoted within the business. It's a great way for us to nurture our own talent.
Q. Which areas of the business do you typically employ apprentices in?
A. This is dependent on the needs of the business, but we generally employ finance apprentices. However we have also welcomed apprentices into our Underwriting team and branch network. We usually start with administration based roles, building an individual’s confidence and knowledge as they gain more responsibility. To name a few, we have finance assistants, underwriting assistants that support with assessing mortgage applications, branch assistants that support with day to day running of a branch and developing customer relationships.
Q. What training opportunities are on offer to your apprentices?
A. On the job training is key, with support from the immediate team (e.g. specialists and Heads of Dept). This is then supporting by specific external training, if required, to do the role to a high standard.
Q. What benefits do your apprentices receive as employees?
A. Our apprentices are treated as any employee, so (after probation) are in receipt of the enhanced benefits of the company, as well as the study time needed with the college. This includes an additional birthday holiday, private medical insurance, gym membership and more.
Q. How much can an apprentice expert to earn with Hanley Economic?
A. We are pleased to offer the externally benchmarked market wage.
Q. Can you tell us more about the progression opportunities available within the business once an apprentice has completed their training?
A. We have many opportunities available and we hope to retain apprentices for the long term.We even have a former apprentice who is now part of our Senior Management team.
Q. Finally, what would your advice me to anyone looking to apply for an apprenticeship?
A. Having an understanding of the area you want to work in is important, but enthusiasm is what we want to see!
