NSCG Newcastle College second-year Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science learner, Lewis Lawton has secured a place with the England Boxing Squad to compete in the EUBC Youth European Championships 2022 in Sofia from 10-22 April.

Lewis was chosen as part of a team of nine boys and seven girls, plus three reserves, after impressing at a selection camp held in Tamworth in February.

Competing in the 'Under 67kg' category, Lewis first started boxing at eleven years old at Impact Boxing where he still trains today. Inspired by his father's successful boxing career as an amateur competitor and more recently as a professional boxer, Lewis follows a grueling training schedule, training 2 evenings a week after college and all day on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday, showing complete dedication to his chosen sport.

Commenting on his boxing career so far, Lewis said: "I love the adrenaline rush of the sport and meeting lots of new people in the gym and in matches. Boxing has also had a positive impact on my studies as it's an extremely disciplined sport which I find helps me to stay focused on my studies. I'm really proud of what I've achieved so far from winning the national championships to being number 1 in England.

"I'm now really focussing my time and energy on the euros and then the national championships, both of which will be brilliant experiences and hopefully help me to achieve my ambition to become a professional boxer once I complete my course at NSCG."
