Siemens Congleton and Newcastle College engineering student Amy Dodd has been presented with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Local Network Prize, designed to award excellence in engineering students by IET Committee Member, Mike Collins.

Amy, who is currently in her final year of her Foundation Degree in Electrical and Electronic Technology at Newcastle College, was selected for the award by the engineering teaching team for being the best all-round student in her cohort, always maintaining an excellent attitude to her studies and striving to achieve the best grades possible.

Commenting on her award, Amy said, “I am really taken aback by this award, which I’m really proud of. I originally came to college and studied a BTEC in Health and Social Care. Back then, I worked in a nursing home and mental health setting, but I decided that I needed more money to save up for a car, so took up the role of Production Manufacturing Engineer with Siemens to earn some extra money. That was twelve years ago and I have thoroughly enjoyed working here ever since, working as a Repair Specialist and now as a Quality Expert.”

“I have really enjoyed all of my courses at Newcastle College over the last five years. My engineering journey began with the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering where I achieved a Double Distinction*. I then chose to study for my HNC at Newcastle College, and I’m now about to complete my Foundation Degree. The learning experience provided by the team at Newcastle College really appealed to me as all of the teaching staff had industry experience and were able to give real-life examples throughout my courses, and that really helped me to pass my courses and to get a grip on the subject area.”

Dave Halliwell, Curriculum Leader for Higher Education Engineering at Newcastle College, added, “Amy has been with us for five years and has completed her studies in engineering at Level 3, 4 and 5. She is a hard-working student who is happy to support her peers and the teaching team when required. She is well supported by her employer, Siemens. We wish her well for her future career."
