We recently chatted to Callum Hutchinson who left NSCG last summer after completing a BTEC Level 3 in Information Technology, to find out how the course has helped him to pursue a career in this area through an apprenticeship with RCDTS/HMRC.
Q. Why did you choose to study the BTEC Level 3 Information Technology?
A. I chose this course as I was very invested in ICT and Computer Science, and I think that this was the best choice for opening the doors I needed in my career.
Q. What did you enjoy most about your course?
A.I really enjoyed the way that the staff treated us as equals and helped us through our course. I left College with the skills needed to start me on my way into employment. I really enjoyed the educational trips abroad, which was another way to see how this course could broaden my horizons.
Q. How did the skills learnt on the course help you to get progress onto an apprenticeship?
A. The skills from the course helped me to be develop and increase my knowledge of a broad set of ICT and Computer Science skills, which did appeal to my now employer. As well as that it gave me a practical understanding of ICT and the computer industries.
Q. Did you undertake any work experience whilst studying?
A. Yes, I took apart in Capgemini’s Work Experience programme which I very much enjoyed and funnily enough I ended up not working for them but the organisation they help RCDTS/HMRC, so this was definitely a really useful element of the course, especially for students who want to progress onto an apprenticeship immediately after college.
Q. Where would you like to be in 5 years?
A. I would like to be a fully qualified Software Developer or a training Network Engineer.
Q. Would you recommend the course and NSCG to other students?
A. I would definitely recommend NSCG for technology students as it is a really good place to be if you want to stand out!
