On Thursday 17 May, Stafford College student, Lee Woodward, aged 19 from Church Leigh in Staffordshire, was announced as the Regional Winner for the SkillBuild Best New Entrant Bricklaying Award at the recent regional finals hosted at South and City College Birmingham.

Lee, who is currently completing a Bricklaying apprenticeship at Stafford College, went head to head with six other contestants at the recent SkillBuild competition, who were tested on their technical abilities, time management, character and commitment. Following his success, Lee will now work towards taking part in the senior level of the SkillBuild competition next year.

SkillBuild is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices and is delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). Its competitions run across ten craft occupations including: Bricklaying, Carpentry, Furniture and Cabinet Making, Joinery, Painting and Decorating, Plastering, Roof Slating and Tiling, Stonemasonary, Wall and Floor Tiling.

Lee’s achievement is one of many of the Construction department’s successes in recent months, with both Lee and fellow Bricklaying apprentice Sam Yeomans, winning awards at both a national and regional level for the College.

Julian Harrison, Curriculum Leader in Construction and Built Environment at Stafford College, said: “This is another great achievement for Lee and we are exceptionally proud of him. Following his recent success in the Guild of Bricklayers new entrant competition back in March, Lee was determined to keep on competing and represent the College. He has worked hard on more training tasks to really improve his skills and push himself to produce outstanding quality of work. This all came together for him on the day where he was up against some of the best skilled bricklaying apprentices in the region.”

Stafford College offers a wide-range of Construction courses at our dedicated Palmbourne Construction and Skills Centre, including: bricklaying, carpentry, joinery and many more.
