Michael Tunnicliffe, aged 41 from Hanley, is one of many mature students completing an apprenticeship with leading apprenticeship provider, Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG).

Michael, who was previously an Electrician for 12 years, decided to start volunteering with local housing charity, Brighter Futures following a serious illness which left him unable to continue his role. After sixteen months of volunteering with the charity, Michael completed his Level 2 Apprenticeship in Adult Social Care at Stafford College which then enabled him to secure a role as a Support Worker in the charity’s homeless hostel in Hanley. Michael has set himself a target of 5 years to be able to gain a management position at Brighter Futures and has recently applied to complete his Level 3 Apprenticeship in Health Care Workers at the College in order to continue his professional development.

Stafford College continues to quash the stereotype surrounding apprenticeships and age and actively recruits students of all ages to further develop their professional careers. Apprentice Michael, is one of many adult learners studying at the College demonstrating the potential of work-based learning for individuals wanting to further their career whilst remaining in the workplace.

On being an apprentice, Michael, said: “You are never too old to achieve something you want to do if you feel passionate enough about it, even something that you had not previously thought possible. Being an apprentice is a good way of learning and keeping up-to-date with any changes to laws and policies within my area of work. I like the fact that you can learn on the job and the fact that if you don’t know something then it is predominantly up to you try and find out.”
