Industry placement secures apprenticeship for Beauty student, Mia Tonks

Beauty Therapy student, Mia Tonks is following her dreams of working in a salon thanks to the work placement programme available to all learners at Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group.

All students at NSCG benefit from a work placement as part of their study programme, to help prepare them for their future careers and Mia’s story is a shining example of how a successful work placement can lead to being offered a step on to the career ladder.

Mia started her placement at AP Hair and Beauty in Hednesford in November 2019. The placement was originally only for three days but Mia impressed the owners so much that they have already offered her an apprenticeship which will start in September. In the meantime, Mia is still working in the salon, receiving invaluable training from the team which will be a real benefit for when her apprenticeship begins.

Talking about her work placement, Mia said: “The best part of working in the salon is adapting myself to be qualified to work in a salon and having the skills and experience to offer great customer service. I have also loved how welcoming the rest of the staff are, and how they have taken time to train me. I now feel confident portraying a professional image in this busy salon, and I am already putting the theory I learned at college into practice in the salon environment.

I feel really prepared and excited for my Level 2 apprenticeship to start in September, and I have benefited from extra training in areas including pedicures and gel nails from the team here at AP Hair and Beauty.”
