HNC/D Art STUDENTS exhibit at community church

The exhibition, which opens to the public on Friday 22 March from 7pm until 9pm, showcases the work created by the students and looks at the history of the building, what is happening now and its hopes for the future, raising the profile of the space and the role the church plays in the local community.

After facing possible closure eight years ago, the cathedral-like, gothic style church on Leek Road in Hanley, has since been on an incredible journey of transformation and is now a beautiful space within the community. Each piece of work in the exhibition focuses on a vision or theme of the historic building and looks at its importance as a community centre, a place of faith and worship, a place for support amongst many others and have each been produced in the style of different artistic genres.

First year HNC/D Graphic Design student at Newcastle College, Katie Platt, whose work is on display at the exhibition was recently interviewed on the Reverend Geoff Eze’s own show, ‘Geoff Sits In’, which is hosted on BBC Radio Stoke. On the exhibition, Katie said: “We’re exhibiting our work at All Saints Church and what a fabulous venue it is. It’s a great way to see how the church has developed over time and as a group we’re all really proud of the amazing work we’ve been able to produce. We’ve all been working really hard and we’ve gained so much from the experience.”

Shannon Ball-Mulley, Curriculum Leader for the HNC/D in Fine Art, Graphic Design and Photography at Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) said: “As a course team, we like to focus on making students work ready and moving on to the next stage of their education. As a result of that, we take part in many projects, competitions, live briefs and work experience that enhances their studio practice. We exhibit all project work as a way of showing the local community why we are here and what we do. We complete a community project each year and All Saints is an example of that. It is our responsibility as a local education provider to have good relationships with our community and give something back. We want our students to be confident, experienced and very good at what they do when they leave and go into the world of work.”
