Newcastle College hosted a DigniTEA event at their Knutton Lane campus on Friday 2 February to promote the positive aspects of care for Dignity Action Day.

Work Based Learning staff in Health and Social Care and Foundation Studies students from the College served a delicious afternoon tea to a range of visitors, including members of the community, service users from residential care homes and individuals with learning disabilities from across Newcastle-under-Lyme and Stoke-on-Trent.

Dignity Action Day aims to ensure people who use care services are treated as individuals and are given choice, control and a sense of purpose in their daily lives.

The event, which took place in the College’s Starbucks Coffee Lounge, saw staff and students deliver a number of organised activities and entertainment. Chris Rawlinson, who is a Work-Based Learning Assessor at Newcastle College, sang a selection of songs from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, Work Based Learning Manager, Teresa Goodwin led a game of ‘Hoy’ and members of the community and students ran a raffle to raise money for MIND, a national charity that provides advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem.

The College welcomed Julian Cragg from Staffordshire County Council and Care Match to say a few words to open the event and he was joined by Lesley Flatley from Davlyn House who read a poem about dignity in care.

Jane Tunnicliff, Head of Work Based Learning at Newcastle College, said: “As a College, we’ve always supported Dignity Action Day by organising an annual event to raise awareness of dignity in care. It’s a great opportunity for us to give something back to local communities across Staffordshire whilst raising awareness of an important cause. Each year we have supplied refreshments including cakes and biscuits made by Newcastle College students and we’ve organised a number of entertaining activities with great prizes to be won.”

Health and Social Care students have supported with the organisation of the event as part of their studies and set curriculum. Newcastle College offers a number of Health and Social Care courses for young people to study once they have left school.
