For the fourth consecutive year, staff and students from Newcastle College, part of Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group, have teamed up with one of the UK’s largest house builders, Redrow, to run a high profile art competition with Level 3 BTEC Art & Design students.

The 26 students were required to work in teams, and were given a live brief to produce artwork to be displayed in the Show Homes at Millstone View, Penymynydd. Students could choose from a wide range of themes including nature, floral and architecture – some visited galleries for inspiration, while others took photographs to inspire their work.
Emma Brindley, Redrow’s Head of Interior Design who is proud to be a former student of NULC, said: “It’s the fourth time we’ve tasked students from NULC with creating bespoke artwork for our Show Homes and, while the brief has evolved overtime to allow greater creativity, the standard of work remains high. The result is a stunning collection of pieces that complement the décor in our Show Homes and is proving to be a real talking point amongst visitors.”
For the first time, the overall winning piece was a painting on a canvas and was designed by Declan Sillick and Keiran Lewis. This impressive abstract piece has since been framed and hung in the kitchen of the Warwick Show Home which is a fantastic achievement for the students.
Andrea Birch-Machin, Lecturer in Art & Design at Newcastle College, said: “The collaboration with Redrow provides valuable experience for students interested in both art work and interior design as a potential future career option at an early stage of their creative journey. It gives them an understanding of exact client requirements, specific interior specifications and how to tailor their creativity to meet these demands. They also get to keep their original art work for their portfolio, which they will take either to university, apprenticeship or job interviews, the inclusion of which adds to their skill base and professional association.”
Newcastle College is renowned for its Art, Design and Media courses at various levels, including A Levels, vocational qualifications, apprenticeships and recreational courses. For more information about the courses on offer, visit www.nscg.ac.uk, email info@nulc.ac.uk or call 01782 254254.
