Every Other Seat is an ongoing arts project by Staffordshire’s DUST Rising.

Following the first iteration of Every Other Seat in Piccadilly, Hanley in September 2020, Every Other Seat is a fascinating collection of artist-adapted and designed seats that explores the situation the arts has faced during the pandemic. The seats are to act as a symbolic reminder for the loss of the familiar and vibrant, cultural richness that theatre and art brings.

As part of the exhibition, Level 3 Art & Design students at Newcastle College, were challenged to work in groups to produce a seat reflecting the themes of the installation.

Stacey Rowell, Curriculum Leader for Art & Design said: "We are always looking for our students to experience live briefs and collaborations with artists, so were thrilled when we were asked to collaborate with Dust Rising on the ‘Every other seat’ project. This is such an important and innovative project, the students were genuinely excited about being involved. They were put into small groups to initiate ideas and produce a final chair that represented their collaborative response to the theme. They have produced some fantastic work. We are so impressed with the diversity produced and some of the depth of consideration given to the theme. This has been an invaluable experience for the students."

The seats created can be seen in the windows behind the ex-Dorothy Perkins store at the Roebuck Centre.
