Art & Design students from Stafford College met with one of the world's most influential Graphic Designers, David Carson, at an exhibition of new work on a recent college trip to Barcelona.
The exhibition, which was held on Wednesday 27 February 2019 at the Haimney Multidisciplinary Art Gallery in Barcelona, was David Carson's largest exhibit to date. David Carson is a prominent contemporary graphic designer and art director who’s experimental and innovative typography design helped to define the “grunge art” era. He is most prominently known as one of the founders and art director of the alternative music magazine Ray Gun and has won over 230 Awards for his work in graphic design, photography, advertising and branding.
The event showcased his innovative art and designing through the usage of recycled materials and his distinctive form of digital design which brought him into acclaim in the early 1990's. Students studying a variety of artistic pathways at the College, got to hear from the artist directly about his inspirations and career to date, with the opportunity for a Q&A and signing session.
On the experience, BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art & Design student Kate Whitehouse, said "My experience of Barcelona has been amazing, there have been so many eye openers throughout. Getting to meet Dave Carson and have him personally share the vision behind his work was unreal!".
Spencer Whiting, course leader for the BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art & Design at Stafford College, said: "The Foundation Course is a one year bridging course for Arts students after A-levels, which enables them to experience a wide range of techniques and practice in all disciplines before they specialise. Part of this is about introducing our students to exciting creative practitioners in new environments. Carson in Barcelona is something our students will never forget."
The remainder of the trip was spent visiting the Museum of Contemporary Art as well as iconic pieces of Spanish architecture designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí such as Park Güell and the famous Sagrada Familia. An excellent and enlightening time was had by all!
